United Cerebral Palsy has released a report, State of Disability in America, an evaluation of the disability experience in America. The 65-page document examines existing research on the overall state of affairs for individuals with disabilities in America in the areas of disability rights, healthcare, education, employment, housing, and organizing for change. While tremendous strides have been made, especially with the Americans with Disabilities Act, things are still not right, the report says. By and large, people with disabilities are more likely to live in poverty and be dependent on government services. The U.S. Department of Education has published a booklet explaining alternate assessments and how they relate to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 2004), and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Among other things, the document addresses why progress on IEPs cannot be used to meet the accountability provisions of NCLB. On request, this document can be made available in accessible formats, such as Braille, large print, and computer diskette.

Many employees with significant disabilities know the importance of balancing Assistive Technology (AT) and Workplace Personal Assistance Services (WPAS) as employment accommodations. Unfortunately, employees who need both accommodations are fearful that potential employers will consider the request for both accommodations unreasonable. Employers who do not fully understand the need for these employees to have both accommodations might agree. It is important for the employee to explain why both supports are needed to maximize efficiency. To justify the need for both accommodations, the employee should become very knowledgeable about workplace AT and workplace PAS. The Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
Evaluation Questionnaire for Web Site Resources
Through a national network of cooperating libraries, the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) administers a free library program of braille and audio materials circulated to eligible persons who are unable to use standard printed material because of visual or physical disabilities in the United States by postage-free mail. Library patrons can expect to borrow audio or braille books such as they might find in print at a local public library, including a collection of music scores and instrumental instructional materials in braille and audio format. Books and magazines in audio form (talking books) and braille are delivered to eligible readers by postage-free mail and are returned in the same manner. Specially designed phonographs and cassette players are also loaned free to persons who borrow talking books from their library.

LifeSmarts: The Ultimate Consumer Challenge is an educational opportunity that develops the consumer and marketplace knowledge and skills of teenagers in a fun way and rewards them for this knowledge. The program can be used as an activity for classes, groups, clubs, and community organizations. LifeSmarts, run as a game-show style competition, is open to all teens in the U.S. in the 9th through 12th grades. Teams of four to five teens compete in district and state matches with the state winners going to the national competition to vie for the national LifeSmarts title. LifeSmarts is a program of the National Consumers League. The program is completely accessible to students with disabilities.
